 Active since the 1940s, Shungo Sawada has been a foundational figure in Japan’s modern jazz scene, establishing the renowned combo Double Beats and leading the Mocambo Sessions. While he is an undeniable master guitarist, he has surprisingly few albums as a bandleader. Among these, *Formation*, part of the Victor *Japanese Jazz* series, stands out as a significant and ambitious work, often regarded as one of his masterpieces. 

The album opens with Wayne Shorter’s *Footprints*, presenting a dignified and poised performance that carries an underlying simplicity and depth, creating a truly captivating listening experience. Following this, the tracks *Formation*—filled with explosive energy and a sense of momentum—and the jazz-rock-inflected *Unlucky Guy* showcase the album’s dynamic range. Closing with another Shorter composition, *Chief Crazy Horse*, the album maintains a cohesive tone throughout, resulting in a remarkably high level of completeness. *Formation* captures the essence of the *new mainstream* in Japan and is a special addition to any jazz collection.

 1940年代から活動し、名コンボ、ダブル・ビーツの結成や、モカンボ・セッションの主宰などを通じ、日本のモダン・ジャズ・シーンの礎を築いた沢田駿吾。押しも押されもせぬ名ギタリストだが、自身のリーダー作は意外と少ない。なかでも＜ビクター日本のジャズ＞シリーズにおける本作『Formation』は、沢田の意欲作にして代表作との呼び声も高い作品である。幕開けはウェイン・ショーター作「Footprints」。凛としていて端正なのだが、そのクールな佇まいのなかにそこはかとない朴訥さも滲み、なんとも味わい深い。そして、炸裂感と疾走感のある「Formation」や、ジャズロック的アプローチの「Unlucky Guy」などをはさみ、終曲に再びショーター作の「Chief Crazy Horse」を置いている。多彩でいて全体のトーンには統一感があり、アルバムとしての完成度はすこぶる高い。日本における＜新主流派＞の姿を捉えた、特別な1枚だ。
