Though it was a commercial failure and mostly ignored by contemporary critics, The Velvet Underground & Nico became one of the most acclaimed and influential albums in popular music. In 2003, it ranked 13th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
