日本を代表するビッグ・バンドのひとつである、宮間利之率いるニューハード。1969年発表の『パースペクティヴ』以降、先鋭的なサウンドでビッグ・バンド・ジャズの新たな地平を切り拓いてきた。本作『仁王と鳩』は、1972年リリースのニューハードを代表する作品のひとつ。全編で山木幸三郎が作・編曲を担当し、かねてからのテーマのひとつである“日本”を深く追求した。緻密で重層的なアレンジと演奏で表現する日本の風物、伝統、情景。重厚でダイナミックななかに幽玄とも言える日本的情緒のある旋律が響く。強靭なグルーヴが先導する「成人式」を筆頭に、深い味わいと大いなる刺激に満ちた曲が並ぶ。これぞ、ニューハードの真骨頂にして最高潮である。

New Hard, led by Toshiyuki Miyama, is one of Japan's leading big bands. Since the release of “Perspective'' in 1969, they have opened up new horizons in big band jazz with their cutting-edge sound. This work “Nio and Hato'' is one of the representative works of new hard released in 1972. Kozaburo Yamaki was in charge of the entire composition and arrangement, and deeply pursued one of his long-standing themes: "Japan." Japanese features, traditions, and scenes expressed through elaborate, multi-layered arrangements and performances. A profound and dynamic melody with a Japanese atmosphere that can be described as mysterious. Starting with “Coming of Age Ceremony,'' which is led by a strong groove, there are songs full of deep flavor and great excitement. This is the true essence of new hard work and its climax.
