許茹芸從國光藝校畢業之後，開始在民歌西餐廳演唱，因緣巧合被推薦到上華唱片公司試音，當時她自彈自唱王菲的《冷戰》、辛曉琪的《領悟》及林憶蓮的《為你我受冷風吹》等。因而加盟上華唱片。1995年，她發行了第一張個人專輯《討好》，很可惜當初這張專輯並沒有讓她一炮而紅。1996年，許茹芸發行第二張個人專輯《淚海》，專輯在台灣賣出30萬張、全亞洲累積120萬張的銷售量。
